신혜진 Shin Jin

신혜진은 옛 고서의 낡은 종이를 이용하여 시간의 축적과 인내의 과정을 “입체”로 표현하는 작업을 한다. 금속공예를 전공했던 작가는 2015년 공근혜갤러리에서 열린 첫 전시에서 조각 작품을 소형화 하여 ‘몸에 지니고 다니는 조각’ 이라는 독특한 작업을 선보여 화단의 주목을 받았다. 작가는 유년시절부터 현재의 시간과 그 시간이 소멸하는 순간에 대한 궁금증이 끊이질 않았다. 이러한 관심 때문에 여러 실험적인 재료들 (원초적인 재료인 돼지비계로 시간의 순환을 표현하는 등) 로 인간이 살아가는 모습과 인간의 마음상태를 재료의 특성으로 표현하고자 하는 시도들을 해왔다. 작품의 주 재료는 A 4 사이즈도 채 되지 않는 옛 고서에서 뜯어낸 낱장의 빛 바랜 종이들이다. 인간의 새로운 생명이 창조되듯 고서를 잘게 자르고 이어 붙이기를 수 없이 반복해 작품에 생명력을 부여한다.

 신혜진은 단색화에 관심이 많았던 자신의 회화적 성향을 입체화 된 조형물로 표현한다. 작품의 조형적인 면은 작가가 기도할 때 느껴지는 빛이나 형태에서 영감을 받아 시각화 한 것이다. 인간이 존재하는 현실의 차원과 신이 바라보는 영혼의 세계에 대한 상상을 하면서 평면을 채우는 회화방법과 공간에 존재하는 입체 조형물을 조화시켜 작품을 완성하고자 한다.

Shin Jin uses old paper from antique books to express the process of time accumulation and patience in three dimensions. The artist, who majored in metal crafts, received attention from the art scene by presenting a unique work of miniaturized sculptures called ‘body-carrying sculpture’ at her first solo exhibition held at K.O.N.G gallery in 2015. Since childhood, Shin has constantly been curious about the present time and the moment when that time disappears. Because of this interest, there have been attempts to express human life and condition of the mind as characteristics of various experimental materials (such as expressing the cycle of time with the raw material, pig fat). Today, the main material of the work is faded papers from antique books, which are less than the A4 size. It gives vitality to the work by repeatedly cutting and attaching antique books as a new life is created.

Shin Jin expresses her interest in monochromatic paintings and pictorial inclination into three-dimensional sculptures. The formative aspect of the work was visualized, inspired by the light or form felt when the artist is praying. Imagining the dimension of human reality and the world of the soul that God sees, Shin intends to complete the work by harmonizing the painting method that fills the plane with the three-dimensional sculptures that exist in space.
